What is a traffic marshal / banksman?

A traffic marshal, also known as a banksman, is a designated person who is professionally trained in safely directing vehicles of all shapes and sizes. They are trained to place themselves into correct positions and use banksman signals and possibly radio communication to guide large vehicle drivers when their view is obstructed.

 

 

 
 

What are typical traffic marshal responsibilities?

  • Directing and managin road traffic when motorists enter or exit the site or facility
  • Making sure that drivers and on-site workers follow health and safety regulations
  • Supervising safety orientation and cpnfirming that the correct PPE is worn
  • Clearing the way for the movement of vehicles, including cars, goods vehicles, excavators, trucks construction plant
  • Safeguarding traffic and pedestrian routes on and outside the site of operation
  • Consistent communication with heavy vehicle drivers and the site supervisor
  • Recording deliveries and managing visitor logbooks
  • Responding to applicable ad hoc requests.

What are the requirements to become a traffic marshal?

The general requirement for becoming a traffic marshal is not what you would think.

Most traffic marshals do not need any formal qualifications to operate as one, but to be on the safe side, employers will generally ask employees to undergo some form of training.

All industries will have their own set requirements, and some stricter are than others.

As a traffic marshal you would be expected to have;

  • A valid Traffic Marshal Certificate and ID card
  • Good Physical health and be able to stand for extended periods
  • Excellent verbal communication skills
  • Good knowledge of state health and safety regulations
  • Good attention to detail
  • Excellent visual awareness
  • Ability to communicate using hand signals
  • The two most stringent industries on our list would be construction and security.
