    About this course

    This Functional Skills English exam is available at Level 1 or Level 2; and covers everything from the very basics to the more advanced skills. Functional Skills English qualifications are nationally recognised and are equivalent to GCSE Grade C (Grade 4). The English Level 2 exam can be taken from the comfort of your own home or sat at our training centre in North London. If you are looking to obtain a GCSE in English or Functional Skills in English, this exam only option is one of the fastest ways to achieve the qualification.


    How it works

    After purchase, you will be sent login details by email for access to your own online Functional Skills English revision portal, which you can use independently to revise for your Functional Skills English Level 2 exam. Once you are ready to take your English exam, you can use our calendar booking tool on your online booking account to arrange your exam or call us on 0208 342 7210 to arrange your booking.

    Before you can book your Functional Skills English exam on your online account, you must complete the following:

    • Identification Upload
    • Initial Assessments in English and Maths
    • Learning Styles questionnaire
    • Successfully complete a English practice test

    Please be aware that there is no tutor support available in this English course. If you have already purchased and would like to have support from a tutor you will need to upgrade for an additional cost.

    You will have access to our free e-learning GCSE Equivalent – Functional Skills English Course for up to 3-months. You must book your English test within 3-months of purchase or you may need to re-purchase the course again.

    How the exam works

    Once you have completed all the enrolment tasks on your online learning account, you can then book your English examination with us. We require a minimum of 7-days notice for any examinations. 

    Upon booking the exam via your online account, you will receive a booking confirmation so you know that your slot is secure. 

    If you have paid to take your Functional Skills English exam online, the awarding body will email you 2-working days after your booking with joining instructions. 

    Please take note of the entry requirements, as if you do not meet these requirements you will not be able to sit the online English exam. 

    You must arrive on time for your examination or you will need to pay the retake fee

    The modules included in this qualification are:

    Online Examination

    • 1 Hour and 10 Minute Examination: Reading
    • 1 Hour and 20 Minute Examination: Writing
    • Assessment: 10 Minute Presentation
    • Assessment: 10 Minute Discussion
    • Assessment: 10 Minute Presentation Feedback

    In-centre examination

    • 1 Hour and 10 Minute Examination: Reading
    • 1 Hour and 20 Minute Examination: Writing
    • Assessment: 10 Minute Presentation
    • Assessment: 10 Minute Discussion
    • Assessment: 10 Minute Presentation Feedback

    Exam results can be held for up to 32 days from the date of the exam being taken. 

    Entry Requirements

    There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification, however, candidates must be over 16 to enrol.


    In-centre examinations

    The Functional Skills English exam is available to all candidates aged 16+. Candidates will be required to travel to our centre in London for the exam.


    Online Examinations

    To be eligible for online examination, learners will need to have a laptop/computer with the following features:

    • A Web Camera
    • A computer/laptop with a windows operating system (Mac/Tablet/Chromebooks are not compatible)
    • A smartphone with a camera

    You must arrive on time for your examination or you will need to pay the retake fee


    In-house examinations

    Examinations are run every Tuesday, Thursday and every other Saturday at the following times;

    Tuesday – 10an

    Thursday – 10am

    Saturday – 10am (every 2 weeks)


    Online Examinations

    Examinations are run every weekday (Mon-Fri) at the following times;

    • 10 am - 1.30 pm
    • 11 am - 2.30 pm
    • 12 pm - 3.30 pm
    •  1  pm - 4.30 pm
    •  2  pm - 5.30 pm
    •  3  pm - 6.30 pm

    We require 7-days notice for exam bookings

    Units and Pathways

    3 distinct strands each of which are assessed separately. All of the tasks and assessments are based on practical real-life situations which you could encounter in your work or home life. They also include the use of presentation skills as well as using grammar, spelling and punctuation correctly.

    Speaking and listening: Taking part in a discussion, listening and responding to other people’s point of view, being able to present your ideas to a small group

    Reading: Reading a variety of different texts and interpreting and responding to the information

    Writing: Presenting information and ideas in your own words.

    Results and certification

    Results for Functional Skills qualifications are usually available within a couple of weeks, however, they can in some cases be held for up to 32-days from the date the exam was taken. The results will be emailed to you once they have been published for the centre to view by the awarding body.

    The certificate will be sent to you by email if you have passed your exams, and this will be sent in the form of an e-certificate which Universities and higher education will accept as a GCSE English Equivalent Qualification.


    Fees, Rescheduling and Retakes


    If in the unfortunate event you are not successful in any one of your examinations, each examination will be chargeable for re-take at £50.00 per exam.

    Reading Retake = £50.00

    Writing Retake = £50.00

    Speaking and Listening Retake = £50.00

    Reading and Writing Retake Combined = £80.00

    You can request for your examination to be re-marked, however, this is subject to a £50.00 remarking fee.


    If for any reason you are not able to attend your exam or miss your appointment with less than 2-working days notice, you will need to pay the £80.00 retake fee if you wish to take your exam.


    You can re-schedule your exam free of charge if you have provided 2-working days’ notice. This needs to be sent in writing to [email protected]
