The role of a teaching assistant was featured in the educational publication TES (available in Sainsburys, WH Smiths and others) in 2014. There has been a good amount of debate as to the role of a teaching Assistance should be. It is something quite new to the Educational system, certainly 20 years ago there was no such position, but as class sizes have increased and the demands have increased on teachers given that there is far more paperwork required of them from the Educational regulator/supervisor OFSTED. There is more understanding now too about how the Educational system should provide for all students and that students who struggle with the speed or methods that they are asked to adopt for learning deserve to have some extra educational help during school time.

The study that looked at the teaching Assistant’s role was carried out by England’s Education Endowment Foundation (EEF). It was found that Children struggling with reading and maths make significant progress when given as little as 30 minutes’ individual attention a week by a teaching assistant. Primary school students in particular who received two 15-minute maths sessions a week made three months more progress over the course of a year than their classmates, children who were helped with their reading for 20 minutes a day for just 10 weeks made similar progress. One school reported that the reading ages of its students leaped by as much as four years in 10 weeks.
