Everything You Need to Know - Level 3 Diploma in Residential Childcare

So let’s talk about the Level 3 diploma in residential childcare that is part of the requirement to work in children’s homes. It was brought in in April 2015 and if you want to work in residential childcare then you will need this qualification.

Working for the Level 3 diploma in residential childcare will help you to develop the skills and the knowledge that you are going to need to work with young people and children who are living in residential care.  The diploma will also have an element that covers understanding the development of children and of young people.

With the knowledge that you gain you will be able to support the young people and children, you work within residential childcare. You will gain knowledge and skill in helping children in areas of development and well-being, helping them to form positive attachments and relationships, teaching them about various aspects of their safety and health and giving them information appropriate to their age and being aware of the threat of sexual exploitation.  You will also help them to communicate effectively and how behaving in a positive way will help to ensure a positive outcome.

In this course, there will also be opportunities to study certain optional topics that apply to residential childcare in specific settings as well as to childcare in the setting of respite care.

To study for a Level 3 diploma in residential childcare you need to be a minimum of eighteen years old and that although that is our requirement for study other training providers or colleges may have different guidelines and to study for the diploma an applicant would need to be volunteering, on a practical placement or working in residential childcare.  This is because they will be required to show knowledge and skill competence.

When it comes to assessment for your diploma you'll be assessed using the standard assessment which will look at your portfolio of evidence your coursework and any practical demonstrations and assignments.  Once you have completed the diploma and gained expereince in your chosen role, you may want to purse a career in management, you can achieve this by enrolling onto the Level 5 Diploma in management for Residential Childcare.

  • A care assistant or worker
  • Childcare work in a residential setting
