You’re about to take your first step towards a career as a Teaching
Assistant
Working as a teaching assistant is incredibly rewarding. In addition to helping
children develop both socially and academically, you’ll serve as a guardian, friend
and role model. Becoming a qualified teaching assistant is a smart career move, as it
opens doors to many other education sector roles.
The high demand for teaching assistants means that finding your first job should be
a walk in the park. According to the Skills and Employment Trend Report of October
2020, there are nearly twice as many unfilled teaching assistant roles as there are
unfilled teaching positions.
How to become a Teaching Assistant
Entry requirements for teaching assistants vary from school to school. Previous
experience in childcare, nursery work or youth work is advantageous, as it
demonstrates to employers that you have the right personality to work with children.
Volunteering at schools or community groups is a great way to gain experience and
enhance your CV.
Most schools ask that teaching assistants have Maths and English GCSE grades of
C or above (or equivalent qualifications). You will also need to submit to a
background check carried out through the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).
Qualifications needed
Aspiring teaching assistants will need GCSEs (or equivalent) in Maths and English of
C or above. Note that some schools may specify grades of B or above.
 Level 2 Award in Support Work in Schools
 Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools
 Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools

A Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools may be
necessary if you ultimately want to work as a Higher Level Teaching Assistant
(HLTA), due to the additional responsibilities associated with this role.
