Worried About Losing Your Job? Here's How to Keep It

Getting a good job can be a difficult and intimidating task. Yet, as intimidating as the climb is, the fall is far more terrifying. How do you stop yourself from losing your job?

For some, this possibility is creeping ever closer to becoming a harsh reality.  This is in part thanks to the uncertainty caused by the political aftermath of the British decision to leave the European Union.

J.P. Morgan: Saying What Other Companies Are Thinking

According to a BBC article posted on June 3, 2016  J.P. Morgan, one of the world's largest banks; which employees more than 16,000 people in the United Kingdom warned that they might have to reduce the number of employees located in the U.K. in the event that British citizens voted to leave the European Union. And of course, that's exactly what happened.

Why are J.P. Morgan saying this? According to the article, “As a member of the EU, the UK serves as a base for foreign owned banks to sell services to any other country in the EU. On Brexit, that so-called "passport" for the selling of financial services may have to be renegotiated.”

Even though Brexit is expected to be a lengthy process that may never fully come to fruition, J.P. Morgan's stance on the issue only highlights the underlying worries of companies throughout the UK. And it's their employees that will suffer the most.

A Vote of No Confidence

According to another article posted by The Guardian on September 18th, 2016, business confidence in the U.K. has been dragged from thirty-eight percent down to twelve percent, the lowest it has been in four years. This economic uncertainty makes it difficult for businesses to grow and may even force some companies to downsize.

However, as bleak as this all seams there are things you can do in order to protect your employment status.

Aside from just keeping your head down and grinding every day to ensure that your getting as much work done as possible – which is a good idea, but will not help you stand out amongst your peers – I recommend earning a few more qualifications instead.

Earning Extra Qualifications

Not only are qualifications a great way to help you land a job to begin with by padding out your résumé with useful skills, they are also a fantastic way of proving to your boss that you are growing as a person as well as a professional.

It also tells your boss that you are malleable and can fit into a number of available positions in the company.

Sure, you may be a busy person with a full time job, but there's nothing to stop you from studying remotely, which can be done via The Learning Station.

Established in 2007, The Learning Station is part of the solution for employees looking to safeguard their jobs by obtaining more skills. They are accredited as well as regulated and can award a multitude of nationally recognized qualifications across several different fields of study including, but not limited to; Health & Social Care, Business and Administration, Customer Service, and Quality Assurance.

The best part is, because The Learning Station is an online learning center, you can study from home or from the comfort of your favorite coffee shop at a time that is convenient to you.

So, you can grow as a professional in your own time, while maintaining your work ethic within working hours.

Diversify Your Skillset

Your job is important to you, and so you need to take intelligent steps to protect it against the uncertainties that life invents.

If you are willing to do the work to diversify your skill set, you could be viewed as a vital asset to your existing company. In the worst case scenario if a contract termination, you'll be able to apply for a wider range of jobs due to your newly acquired skills and qualifications. It's a win-win.
