5 Ways Millennials are Transforming the Workforce

Millennials: Probably the most over-scrutinized, over analyzed generation of all times. Wikipedia defines millennials as individuals reaching young adulthood in the early 21st century. The exact time period, however, is not very well defined. According to Newsweek magazine, the Millennial generation was born between 1977 and 1994. The New York Times placed the Millennials at 1976-1990 and 1978-1998, while an article in Time magazine claimed millennials were born between 1980-2000. Considering the endpoints, the range 1977 to 2000 can be taken as the broader age group of millennials.

Now let's explore what is it that makes this generation so unique and significant

The prime reason must be the fact that they are the natives of the digital era. They were born and raised in a time where the digital world was booming. This completely changed the way millennials got to learn about the world. Everything else (more or less) I believe is a by-product of the profound digital change. Technology and advancements in science don't fascinate them the way it does to the previous generations. Previous generations often claim that millennials have unrealistic expectations for the future. Some of the most common adjectives used to describe millennials are Self-contained, tech-savvy, lazy, unjustifiably optimistic, open-minded and supportive. Millennials are transforming a lot of spaces but their contribution to changing facets of the workforce, technology, and culture is particularly remarkable.

Millennials in the workforce

Did you know that as of 2017, 56 million millennials were either working or looking for work? That makes them the largest generation in the workforce! Here are five ways in which millennials are transforming the workforce with their outlook and attitudes life:

1. They're choosing Purpose over Paycheck

One of the most notable changes that millennials have brought is that they're turning over jobs with higher salaries to be in a job that will give them higher level satisfaction owing to the purpose of the job or the vision of the organization.

2. The overall job satisfaction matters the most

Millennials have very high expectations in terms of what they want from their employee experience. They are less likely to be in a job if they do not feel engaged and well-recognized in. They are also unlikely to put up with the unpleasant work environment.

3. Millennials + Technology, the perfect combination

It's an open secret that millennials love technology and technology loves millennials. Their trust in technology is unwavering. They tend to readily learn and understand new programs, operating systems. This familiarity and comfort with technology make them highly productive and efficient employees.

4. Millennials are socially conscious

Millennials are a well-informed and socially conscious bunch who are constantly shaping the culture at work. They are the epitome of global citizens. Millennials are exceptionally tolerant of gender, traditional, religious, racial, sexual orientation differences. They are the flag bearers of diversity and inclusivity in the workplace.

5. Work-life balance is a top priority

For this generation, there is a very thin and blurry line between work and other aspects of life. They want to have a social life as well as pursue other activities. They don't feel it's necessary to devote a fixed time to their job or be in the workplace every day. More so because with technology ruling all over, they can be anywhere and still manage to do their job just as efficiently.

Final thoughts

The fact cannot be over-emphasized that millennials are a very unique generation. Millennials are transforming a lot of spaces but their contribution to changing facets of the workforce, technology, and culture is particularly remarkable. Employers and businesses must make some changes to identify the divers on which these millennials are aligned and work on it.
