Looking for a summer job?

It’s almost the summer holidays! As much as we know you are itching to get outside to the beach and have your lay-ins, this is also the perfect time to start looking for your own summer job.

There are so many summer or part-time jobs for anybody looking. You’ll get to make some money and upskill yourself while giving you enough time to chill out with your friends. So let’s help you out with where to look.

Step 1: Start looking right away

Don't wait till school or college breaks up to start looking - with everyone else! If you leave it too late, then all the good jobs and even some of the not-so-good jobs will be gone. So instead, get in early because it shows, as well, that you are keen. Even if you are in the middle of exams, putting aside 15 minutes a day to job-hunt should be possible. You could even ask your parents or someone else for help.

Step 2: Find out what job boards there are in your local area, and don't forget social media groups

Look at local job boards and other information sources like Facebook groups. A lot of employers will advertise for summer help using those groups. Be proactive and post on a page stating what you are interested in doing over the summer.

Step 3: Don't forget offline opportunities

While many of our dealings are online these days, never forget the personal approach. For example, suppose you know a business local to you has hired people in summer roles before. If you were to walk into the business, they would likely be impressed by your initiative and the fact that you have the confidence to visit the company in person.

Step 4: Try something different

If you are having trouble finding a job that really appeals to you, try something different; you never know, you might enjoy it, and, if nothing else, it will be another entry on your CV. Be open-minded and even target jobs that other people are not keen on because there will be less competition, and employers who are having trouble recruiting will be grateful to have you on their staff.

Step 5: Make your CV irresistible

Have a look at your CV. Has it got a proper record of any previous summer jobs? That will be very welcoming information when you apply again for a summer job. If you have any other interests or hobbies, or maybe you have completed the Duke of Edinburgh Award, for example, then make sure to note it on your CV. All this information will help a prospective employer build a picture of the kind of person you are.

How to online job hunt:

Option 1:

Job boards: type "summer jobs" or "part-time jobs" or "student jobs" and set the filters to your area. Here are some examples:
  • Indeed.com
  • Reed.com
  • Studentjob.co.uk
  • Seasonworkers.com
  • e4s.co.uk

Option 2:

Facebook groups - type "part-time jobs" or "summer jobs for teachers". Here are some examples:
  • jobs for teens
  • Hospitality Jobs UK
  • jobs in [insert your home town]

Option 3:

Think of chain shops on your nearest high street > Google search the name followed by the word "jobs" or "careers" > you'll find the official job page for that site, for example:
  • "Tesco careers"
  • "Greggs jobs"
  • "McDonald's careers"
