How to make the most of the Summer Holidays

Summer is finally blooming! The sunshine is out, the longer days are here, the music is playing, and we’re so here for it. June has come and gone, and we’re excited to be getting into the summer holiday season. We’ve got so much to look forward to this month and a lot of work to do as well!

The best part of July must be for all those students and teachers who will be enjoying the summer holidays. The summer holidays are for all those hard-working students and staff to reset, refresh and relax to come back awake and motivated to start their new school year in September.

The break is a long one, changing your regular schedule from Monday to Friday, homework and coursework agendas in place, to having nothing planned for over a whole month! So as lovely as it is to be sitting with your feet up, you may end up finding yourself feeling a bit bored and wanting something to do while you have some time. We’ve come up with some ideas on how you can best utilise your break.

Get a summer job

Who doesn’t want to meet some new people, work on new skills, have some structure over your summer and EARN SOME MONEY TOO?

First things first, get your CV sorted. It doesn’t have to be too detailed if you’re looking for something small over summer. Just pop:

  • Your name
  • Your contact details
  • A little bit about yourself
  • What you studied in school and the grade you got (predicted to reach)

...into a nicely formatted document and you're all good!

Go around your local high street, look into any of the smaller shops, and hand in your CV. You are likely to have luck with a part-time job in the following types:

  • Retail – small independent shops or larger retailers (retailers will probably put their job postings online)
  • Office work – you might find luck if you register with a temp agency. Simple part-time jobs could include basic admin work such as photocopying, filing and regular office duties. This one is good as you can tend to bet that your day will always be the same hours and likely to be only on Monday through to Friday, so you still have your weekends free.
  • Working in hospitality – working in a café, coffee shop, or restaurant is a great way to start working and developing skills. You meet people all the time and can learn a lot about multi-tasking
  • Hairdressers & Barbers – this gives you the best of both worlds with office work and hospitality; your hours are very likely to be in the middle of the day, so you’ll always have your evenings free, but you’ll be able to meet new people and be on your feet if you don’t like sitting at a desk

Babysitting

Babysitting is a great way to earn some extra money, and you’ll be helping the parents greatly. Ask any adults in your life if they have friends with kids who need looking after while the parents are working or maybe need a night off.

Babysitting is not just for girls either. Boys can consider babysitting just as much as girls. If you’re mindful and reliable and you love kids, then why not give it a try? It’s an excellent way for some money in the summer.

Parents would love you even more if you showed them just how responsible you are. One way to show this would be to take an online course in First Aid for young children. This is called a Paediatric First Aid course. We offer one entirely online that can be completed within 6-8 hours. (Don’t worry! You don’t have to finish it all in 1 go; you can log in and out as often as you like within six months until you complete the course!) You can buy this here

Work on your CV

Summer is the time to reset and get that CV looking awesome. If you think your CV is lacking in certain areas, a quick and straightforward way to spruce it up a bit is to add some extra CPD courses. CPD stands for Continuous Professional Development. Basically, this means that you are constantly learning new skills and information. This shows future bosses that you are trustworthy and someone they should want to hire. These courses are the most popular for upskilling yourself:

  • Level 2 in Food Safety – this course is ideal for people who are looking to work in hospitality
  • First Aid courses – we have a range of first aid courses that can help you in your place of work. It is almost vital to know what to do if someone needs help in the event of an emergency, and you will appear very responsible to a future employer
  • Fire Marshal Training – this course is ideal for anyone seeking the training to be a qualified fire marshal in the UK. A fire marshal is responsible for guiding people out of a building safely when it is on fire and helping to minimise the fire risk in the first place. You will gain an understanding of the legal duties of both employers and employees, as well as familiarising yourself with all of the fire safety arrangements that need to be put in place
  • Personal Licence Holders – this course is fully accredited and accepted when applying for your Alcohol Licence. This course is only available for learners of 18 years and above.

Start an online course

This is the chance to get that course up and running. Not interested in college or university but still want to progress further? Easy! Just start the course from the comfort of your own home. You could learn something for fun too! Courses are such a good way to begin your career or employment history. They give you a good insight into communication, time management and professionalism.

Check out our full range of online courses here at The Learning Station.

Now summer is here, we believe that you deserve some lazy days when all you do is binge Netflix and fun days out to the beach. But we also think summer is a great chance for you to improve your CV, learn new skills and meet new people.
