How to Get A CSCS Card

 

You need a CSCS green card to be allowed to work on a construction site. Before you're able to apply for the card, you must meet CITB's requirements.

How to get a CSCS Card:

1. Pass the CITB Health, Safety and Environment test This is a 45-minute touch screen test held at various CITB centres around the country. You must pass this CITB test as one of two requirements. 2. Complete the Level 1 Health and Safety in a Construction Environment course and pass the exam This level 1 course is held in London every day at 10 am until 4 pm. Apply for a CSCS green labourer card through CITB You simply email the certificate for the 1-day course to CITB and, providing you also passed the CITB test, you will get your CSCS Card. The application costs £30.

How Long Does It Take To Get A CSCS Card?

On average, the whole process can take about two weeks. Theoretically, you can take both the 1-day course and the CITB test on the same day but it's more likely that you'd do them separately. It's simply up to you. Then you have to wait. Once you pass the level 1 course, you must wait a few days for the certificate (although sometimes they're processed the very next day). It will get sent to you via email as a PDF and you simply forward that onto CITB and apply for the card. CITB will then take a few days to send the card out for you. So, all together, it can take two weeks.

How To Get A CSCS Card for free

Altogether, with the course, test and application, you're looking at spending up to £200. If you're not in the position to pay, there are ways to get the card for free. CSCS do not provide support or funding themselves but you can find it elsewhere. Here's how you can get a CSCS card for free:

• Job centres

If you're unemployed, your local job centre can provide you with financial support and pay on your behalf.

• Probation officer

Much like the case with job centres, support will be available if you have a probation officer.

• Ask your manager/company

If you're already employed by a construction company, they may pay on your behalf. It is a very common practice.
