GCSE Equivalent: Study Tips For Functional Skills Exams

GCSE results are important and that's the case whether you're a student, graduate or professional. More specifically, you will find that in most educational programmes or job roles, it will require a minimum C grade in Maths or English. This doesn't necessarily have to be a GCSE - it can be a GCSE equivalent instead. One of the most popular choices is sitting functional skills exams.

What to do if you failed your Maths or English GCSE

If you fail your GCSEs, it's not the end of the world. Instead, you can enrol onto a Functional Skills course in Maths, English or even ICT. Level 2 is equivalent to a grade C. These courses are online and you can complete modules at your own pace over 12 months so it's very flexible. On average, the course is complete in 6-8 weeks but it can be completed even faster. It's simply down to the learner. The courses are Ofqual regulated and accredited by City and Guilds. Functional Skills is, therefore, a nationally recognised GCSE equivalent. What is involved in an online Functional Skills course?

To sit a functional skills exam, you need to go through these steps to complete the course:
  • Enrolment
  • Initial assessments
  • Diagnostic assessment
  • Learning resources (modules)
  • Practice exams
  • Final exam
You get sent student log-in details and then you're able to enrol. You simply fill in an enrolment form, upload I.D. and complete initial assessments. Your result from the initial assessment will tell us your current academic level (so, it could be an entry level, level 1 or level 2). Level 2 is equivalent to a grade C and a level 1 is equivalent to a grade D. Whichever level you currently are, you should then start the course on the level above (unless your capabilities are already level 2, in which case, gaining the qualification should be a breeze!). Then, the online modules will open and you work through each of the interactive learning resources, completing skill check quizzes along the way. Once your modules are 100% complete at the final level you wish to get the qualification in, you can go on to take practice exams. The functional skills practice exams are checked by your tutor who will give you feedback. Then, when you're ready, you can schedule the final exam which is taken at a centre with an invigilator.
