CSCS Labourer Cards: How They Fit into the Construction Industry

CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) is the leading skills certification scheme within the UK construction industry. CSCS labourer cards provide proof that individuals working on construction sites have the required training and qualifications for the type of work they carry out. The Scheme keeps a database of people working in construction who have achieved, or who have registered to sit upcoming exams on the various subjects that CSCS provides certification for and have therefore committed to achieving a recognised construction related qualification. Most if not all principal contractors and major house builders require construction workers on their sites to hold a valid CCS card. The labourer cards are printed using 'Smart Card' technology and CSCS provide the coding that is behind the electronic cards to any site's security systems or staff that require them. The labourer cards therefore not only act as authentication that the holder has registered with CSCS and has necessary qualifications to work appropriately on-site but also that this information can be made immediately available to site security systems who can also use the information gathered from the card to integrate with their own check/out payroll systems. CSCS is a not-for-profit limited company meaning that is not run for commercial profit. Most major trade associations, professional institutions, building companies and contractors support the Scheme because it provides a simple, consistent way for construction workers to show that they have the required qualifications and training to work on a construction site. There are now over two million registered users of the CSCS card on their database and so it really is an industry wide initiative.
