4 Routes to Find Employment

Finding new employment can be a difficult and time-consuming task. However, it is essential that we find work so that we can put a roof over our heads, food on the table, pay bills and even go on the odd holiday. Providing you have a decent CV, there are many routes to employment and we advise you to try all avenues. In this blog post, we share 4 common routes into employment:

Online Application

Many employers will take advantage of the Internet when looking for employees. Whether they use their own website or that of an online job board like Totaljobs or Indeed, it will be easy to review the job description before making an application. This method also makes it simple for you to apply for the job as you will usually only need to send a cover letter along with your CV. Alternatively, the company's website may include an online form that needs to be completed. This will often require answering some competency question which require some thought. One thing to keep in mind though is to try to submit your application within the first week of when the vacancy has been made available. Many firms receive a surplus number of applications. So they will not have the time to go through each one.

Recruitment Agencies

Using a recruitment agency to find a job will enable you to specify exactly what you want from a job, such as whether you want a contract or temporary role.
A recruitment agency is well placed to be able to find you the right job
A recruitment agency is well placed to be able to find you the right job as they are in close contact with numerous employers. However, do keep in mind that some recruitment agencies will try to place you in a job that does not meet your requirements. So do ask questions about the role before you commit. After all, recruitment agencies do get commission from employers when a vacancy is filled. At some recruitment agencies, you will also be able to get advice on your CV including how to improve it, if necessary. In addition, if you have an interest in a specific industry to work for, then there a number of specialist recruitment agencies that are out there. Provided that you meet the specialist recruitment agency's requirements. To give you an example, a recruitment agency that specialises in dealing with construction roles will ask all their candidates to hold a green CSCS card.

Networking

Saying the right thing to the right person can be an unexpected route to finding the right employment. By speaking to the right people and letting them know that you are in the market for a new job, you can discover the perfect role. Take advantage of any opportunity to network and let family and friends know that you are looking for a job. Whether you attend an organised industry event or speak to someone on a one-on-one basis, be ready with your some details. This may be information about your work experience or education. Though this may be most relevant with those in the industry that you want to work in, you do not have to limit yourself to this. Even people who do not work in your industry may still have connections that can lead to your perfect job. The more people you make aware of what you are looking for, the more likely it is that you will find a suitable job as people will keep you in mind. Be sure to have some CVs with you if attending a formal recruitment/networking event to handout to potential employers.

Speculative Application

If there is a particular place that you would love to work but they have not advertised any jobs, there is no need to give up. Some firms may be considering recruiting new employees but have not yet taken any steps to advertise. Alternatively, they may not have the budget to dedicate to recruitment. Making a 'cold' application to a company by submitting your CV can save them time and money, making it easy for them to fill a job role. It will also demonstrate that you are proactive and keen on working at the company.
